Road-Tested?

Does anyone have recommendations for a cross-country plane ride (and then a five-hour drive to Vegas)? Suggestions of audiobooks are most welcome. I'm about to attempt a trip sans laptop, so I won't have my usual access to DVD entertainment for 10 days.

I'm especially interested in portable books (no "War and Peace").

Sorry to say I've never done the audiobook thing, but coincidentally, June is National Audiobook Month! Not that there's any obvious promotion of it (a Google search came up with nothing helpful).

My recommendation for long trips: Podcasts of "This American Life." Great stuff, and I always miss it when it airs, so the podcasts are super-handy!

So, the day before my big trip (when we had the crazy tornado weather!), I rushed to the library and found two copies of "Fortress of Solitude." I noticed the boxes were different sizes but didn't think too much about it. Then, at 2 a.m., when I was getting ready to rip the discs onto my iPod, I discovered I had checked out freakin' cassette tapes. Argh!

Anyway, I made do with PRI short stories plus New Yorker short stories, and repeated listenings of Fountains of Wayne's "Traffic and Weather."

I love "TAL," but usually am caught up on the broadcasts because I listen to/from the gym.
